What no one ever tells you about making a national budget is that it’s hard. No, I have no experience in it, but we all know conceptually that it’s not an easy thing to do. Who gets money and who gets left out in the cold? Can taxes stay the same or do they need to go up?
I do firmly believe that in general politicians out here in DC are trying to do what they think is best for the country. I may or may not agree on said actions (and usually I don’t), but they try. Obama’s budget proposal is officially coming out today (though we’ve all known what is it for a few days now) and as The Hill reports he’s probably going to get attacked from both sides of the aisle for it.
Here’s the thing, we know it’s hard but when it comes to budget time everyone always seems to start yelling as if it’s a piece of cake. One of my coworkers found this last week and I’d recommend giving it a run through. It’s a pretty simplistic look at trying to simply balance California’s budget. But if you take it seriously you can pretty quickly see how hard it is to simply say, “Yes let’s cut these programs” or even, “I’m going to raise a ton of taxes to make it work”.
I’m not saying I support Obama’s budget because I bet there are many more places we can make cuts, but it’s worth taking a moment and thinking to yourself that just
